The Helderberg mountain constitutes the northern arm of the great amphitheatre of the Hottentots Holland Mountain range. At the other extreme of the mountain range is Sir Lowry's Pass which crosses the Hottontots Holland mountains into the Overberg and then on to the Garden Route.
The town has a colorful history and was officially named after Lord Charles Somerset in 1820. As recently as 1970, its population was no more than 20,000 but it has since expanded greatly to become a highly desirable national and indeed international holiday and retirement destination.
Somerset West is situated about fifty kilometers from Cape Town (40 Minute Drive). The drive from Cape Town International Airport is Twenty (20) minutes and it takes fifteen (15) minutes to get to the historical town of Stellenbosch.
The renowned warm water beaches of the Strand and Gordons Bay are within a few minutes driving distance away. Somerset West is the ideal starting point for many day trips into Cape Town and surrounds including Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Hermanus. The town is situated in the heart of the famous Cape winelands.
Somerset West now has the amenities of a premier holiday resort and a number of large shopping malls. A modern private hospital is located in the centre of town. The surrounding area boasts a number of famous farms such as Vergelegen, and the area is renowned for its good golf courses of which the most famous is the Gary Player designed Erinvale Golf Estate.
