This railway station and village on the line from Cape Town to Saldanha is well known for the air base and flying school of the SA Air Force located here.  It is also a fossil site of major significance, 20km from the equally important and related site at Elandsfontein, 13km south west of Hopefield.

At Langebaan Road most fossils have been found at or near two phosphate mines.  The fossils found here and at Elandsfontein include parts of the skeletons of rhino, zebra-like horses, short-neck giraffes, various elephant-like creatures, a three-toed horse, and a prehistoric bear.
