It is the largest wine producing region in South Africa and is divided into six main wine regions, each offering their own unique wine route. Constantia, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Robertson and Wellington are the most popular. The geographic area is generally referred to locally as the Boland, meaning uplands in Afrikaans.

Pniel As you travel from Stellenbosch to Franschhoek via the scenic Hellshoogte Pass, the modest village of Pniel lies on the banks of the Dwars River in the Drakenstein Valley. This peaceful town with its close-knit community is well worth a visit. The majestic Boland Mountains, inland from the Cape Peninsula, form the border of this beautiful area – often referred to as ‘the cradle of the South African wine industry’. It was here that the first experiments were conducted to find the most suitable vine cultivars for South Africa conditions. In the 1680’s, French Huguenots brought the art of wine-making to the green valleys of the Boland, bequeathing a 300 year old heritage of fine wines and stately homesteads. Various wines routes in the area provide opportunities for wine lovers to sample the region’s superb wines and gain insight into the wine-making process. A unique cultural experience awaits the visitor to this region, it’s long and colourful history is not only portrayed in the gracious historical buildings but also in the warmth and hospitality of it’s people.
